As of 2020, SABC 1’s Uzalo is reportedly the most viewed weekday telenovela across all channels, resulting in viewers questioning if the actors are sufficiently compensated for their performances.
According to local media, the actors have been getting a decent salary for their respective roles, however, many were shocked to find out that it was not as high as they expected. Uzalo leads, Dawn Thandeka King, who assumes the role of MaNgcobo, and Masoja Msiza, who assumes the role of Nkunzi Mhlongo, are said to be the highest paid, with a reported salary of between R45 000 and R55 000 a month. Next in line, Gugu Gumede, who takes on the role of MaMlambo, reportedly earns between R35 000 and R45 000 a month. Series regulars, Nelisa Mchunu, who plays Fikile, and Wiseman Mncube, who plays Sbonelo, reportedly earn between R25 000 and R35 000. Newcomers, Thulani, played by Thulane Shange, and Godfather, played by Sizwe Khumbuza, are said to earn between R20 000 and R30 000 per month.
